This is tedious, but there are full instructions to do so. UPDATE There is now an Arch Linux Guided Installer. You have to know exactly what you want because nothing is included with it. You have to compile many things from source code. You have to boot into a shell, mount a hard drive, copy over some binaries, and get started. There is no installer (from the creators). They must know more than anyone else, right?Īrch Linux has a learning curve. They passed the threshold and installed it, so they’re a member of an exclusive club. This is why some of the users are so unbelievably smug. Why is Arch so Difficult?Īrch Linux is perceived as a difficult OS to install and use. I could race around that file system, build and change anything I wanted. I knew that silly Pentium 100 machine and its hardware like the back of my hand. Suddenly I could tell you how compilers worked, flags, kernels, interrupts. When I strangled that PC into submission and made Linux work, it was terrific. I wanted to smash my keyboard into the PC until the lights went out. I hosed the entire OS and reinstalled it several times. I struggled to get anything working properly. I also spent countless nights trying to get KDE (a GUI) to work properly. A friend introduced me to a neat alternative named Linux. I couldn’t figure out why anyone would want an operating system that was 40 megabytes and constantly run a GUI. I loved being able to log in to my local library and search for books through “WILI” through telnet. I was so impressed by the power and simplicity. I was learning Unix with a shell account from a local ISP. I tried Linux for the first time around 1995 or 1996. The struggle is part of the journey and will make you a better Linux user. In fact, I’ve said it myself in the past. It requires you to know too much about Linux and hardware to set it up. That’s precisely why Linux newbies should try it! Most will recommend new users avoid Arch Linux.
